Are you Standing on a Soapbox or a Platform?

In today’s modern word, there are a million ways to relay or receive a message.  We have TV, Internet, newspapers, radio, billboards, magazine, and much more.  It’s easy to fall into the trap of convenience and over commitment when promoting your pageant platform.  Your aim in promoting your pageant platform should be to further the cause not further your career.  In this article, we will explore if you are a Sassy Soapbox Speaker or Passionate Platform Promoter.

Soapbox vs Platform

Let’s take in the views from both a soapbox and a platform. In the early 19th century, orators would literally stand on a soapbox engaging in often flamboyant, impromptu or unofficial public speaking. Whereas, a speaker on a platform usually have a well prepared speech for a targeted audience with a desired response. A Sassy Soapbox Speaker is a contestant that just wants her picture with the kids. A Passionate Platform Promoter wants to paint a better picture for the kids.  They are both performing the same task, but is in a position that will actually make a lasting impact.  Now lets take a look at you. With these questions, you will be able to determine where (and on what) you are standing:

  • What is your plan to further the cause of your platform?
  • Do you know who your target audience is for your platform?
  • What is the message that you want to relay?
  • What is the next action you want your audience to take?
  • Is there a way for your audience to support you in the cause of your platform?

It is convient to be scheduled for a speaking event and just show up. However to really promote your platform you will need to build relationships in your community, not yell at people from your soapbox.  Open lines of communication, not only in person, but also by using a blend of communication tools can help to build a scense of community for your cause and your supporters.  Here are some tools you should be utilizing to promote your platform while furthering your cause:

Facebook Fan Pages

  • People want to keep up with what is going on

Newsletters

  • This tool can be a helpful “progress report” for supporters

Blog

  • Let your passion for you cause be public knowledge.

Twitter

  • This tool can help point supporters to your Page, Blog, and Newsletter

With these tools, you can help gather around you people that really want to make a difference in your community and for your pageant platform. Make sure that you are standing on something positvie and solid.  Get people talking and taking actions that will improve the condition of people who really need help, not simply helping people that really want a crown.
