During a recent interview with pageant coach Bill Alverson, who has been responsible for the successes of many title holders including 3 top 5 Miss America contestants, our conversation turned to what makes girls successful in pageantry. Bill believes and coaches that success and failure in pageantry comes down to marketing. For 20 years Bill has been a practicing attorney with an emphasis in litigation and has learned the secrets of how to market his clients to the judge for the best possible outcome. In our pageant world he has shared his secrets learned so you can market yourself to the judges in a positive manner and win the crown.
The following is a summary of our conversation: If you want to be successful in pageantry you have got to have a streaming theme throughout your presentation. From stage to paperwork to interview what is the theme that you wish to portray to the panel of judges? Discovering your theme can be a little tricky so here are 5 pointers to follow:
5 Tips to Discovering Your Theme
- What job are you applying for? What are the responsibilities of the title that you are pursuing?
- Who are you? As a person what are your likes, habits, hobbies etc. Learning who you are emotionally, not who others say about you is vitally important to your presentation. Why? Because you cannot disconnect what you are presenting with who you feel you are.
- What are your positive physical attributes? Selecting colors, patterns, fabrics and outfits that will ascent your strong physical attributes.
- What are you lacking? Are you knowledgeable on current events both locally and on a global scale? Do you lack personality but possess a wealth of knowledge?
- How are you already presenting yourself on Facebook? Myspace? The judges might scan your site and discover some language offensive or photos inappropriate. This could cause them to prejudge you prior to judging you.
Collect this information and come up with a theme that you wish to present to the world and then make sure everything that you do from song to swimsuit coincides with that theme. Having a streaming theme throughout your presentation will cause you to be more memorable to the judges who are looking for a stand out among 50+ beautiful women.
