How to Select the Best Dress for Evening Gown

evening gown, prom dresses, gowns, dresses

Last week I got the opportunity to speak with Keith Pittman, owner of Lasting Impressions and the man responsible for providing evening gowns for some of the most prominent contestants in the Miss America and Miss USA organizations. Resulting from Pittman’s successful track record and the fact that he carries the latest designer gowns by Sherri Hill, Claries Collection and Tony Bowls I wanted to get his opinion on how to make your dress stand out during the evening gown competition.

What is the most important factor in selecting an evening gown?

Answer: Whether you are selecting a prom dress, evening gown or cocktail dress be open minded and trust the opinion of the individuals who are working in the boutique. Keep in mind that the dress that you hate on the rack, may be the same dress you fall in love with when worn. The staff working in a boutique are familiar with various designers and have seen many of these dresses worn, trusting them can save you time and resources. This does not mean that you have to purchase the evening gown that they say purchase but again, something that you hate on the hanger may be the perfect dress when worn. So be open to try several different of options of evening gowns before making a decision.

How should the evening gown fit so the dress stands out?

Answer: Depends on what you mean by standout. :) If you want to leave the judges with a positive, “Lasting Impression,” then you need to know your body type. Know and be comfortable with your body’s strongest assets and liabilities. Then have your dress designed or altered so that the gown ascents your assets or minimizes your liabilities.

What is this years fashion trend for evening gowns?

Answer: In the 2009 Miss USA pageant we saw everything from red carpet to fully beaded. I believe at the Miss America and Miss Universe Pageants we will see more color than in years past not just the traditional black and white. The most important trend is to be you. Find the dress that makes you feel beautiful and then be that beauty.

Side Note From Steven:

Understand your budget prior to going to the boutique to purchase your evening  gown. Having a solid understanding of how much you can spend on a dress will save you time and energy. Then be upfront with those helping to dress you about your budget limitations or lack thereof so they can find the perfect dress for you without having to guess your price range. Just one more step to make the process easier.
