Recently there has been some debate in my circle about whether or not pageants should be beauty pageants or scholarship pageants. Apparently, some girls who compete in pageantry find the words, “beauty pageant” offensive. Would they rather them be called “ugly pageants?”

Miss America is a scholarship pageant. That I could see but that does not neglect the beauty aspect does it? The Miss Universe pageant is more of a winner takes all type of pageant so it couldn’t necessarily be a scholarship pageant could it?

For me, as a generic version I think the terms, scholarship pageant and beauty pageant are applicable however between the two I would choose beauty pageant as the most applicable.
