When it comes to kids’ pageants, navigating the makeup, hair and wardrobe can be a daunting task, especially if you’re new to the game.
But, with a few tips, you can pick the perfect gown that is age, personality and system appropriate for your pageant kiddo. (Read: How to Decide if Your Child Should Compete in a Pageant)
5 Tips to Pick the Perfect Pageant Gown for Kids
1. Make sure you know the rules of the pageant you are entering regarding the gown competition.
This is especially important to ensure you don’t waste your money.
“Some systems have very specific guidelines regarding hemlines and other details,” said Barbara Turner, manager of Winning Crown Boutique. “Follow the rules because the judges will have a copy of them! Most of the time, a ballgown with an even hem not more than one inch off the floor is a good choice.”
Don’t be afraid to ask questions if you are confused about any of the guidelines regarding the wardrobe.
2. If possible, look at pictures of past winners in your child’s age division for that particular pageant.
This is a great tip, especially if you are new to the pageant system, pageants in general, or are changing age divisions.
“It will give you a good idea about what the judges liked and what scored well,” Turner said.
3. If your daughter is going to a “natural” pageant with a no makeup rule for her age division, the color of her gown is very important!
Sometimes our favorite colors don’t fair well with our skin tones. Picking a dress that complements your skin and personality is important to looking good and feeling good on stage. (Read: How Do You Find the Right Evening Gown for Your Skin Tone?)
“You want to make sure your daughter does not look pale under the stage lights in the color you choose,” Turner said.
Don’t know what will look best? Save some time by looking online.
“Find pictures online of other girls in pageant gowns with similar skin tone and hair color to your daughter, and see what you think looks good on them,” suggested Turner. “Then, have your daughter try on dresses in different colors under the brightest lights possible. Also, look for bright, youthful colors rather than anything dark like black or navy.”
4. Try to stay away from pockets in girls’ gowns.
We all love pockets in our dresses, but it is important to note that they have a time and a place and the pageant stage isn’t one of them.
“While it is trendy for ballgowns to have pockets, on stage they are a temptation, especially to young girls,” Turner warned. “You don’t want her on the stage with hands in her pockets, looking like she’s just hanging out.
She needs to have her hands at her side, smiling at the judges, and paying attention to her posture.”
5. Find a dress your daughter loves!
This is without a doubt the most important tip, because if your daughter doesn’t like the gown, she’s not going to rock that stage.
“That is the most important thing you can do.,” Turner said. “If she feels good in her gown, she will be more confident in it on stage. You know that look little girls have in their eyes when they think something looks beautiful? She should have that expression when she looks in the mirror!”
Much of the fun of pageants is getting to get all dolled up in various outfits that we’d never be allowed to wear to school.
It’s supposed to be fun and girls are supposed to feel good about themselves on stage, so be sure to follow these tips to ensure a wonderful presence on stage, and anytime she gets to put her gown on.
