A former Miss Virginia USA titleholder has been charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm. 26-year-old Brittany Nicole Poteet, appeared before NSW Deputy Chief Magistrate, Christopher O’Brien this past Wednesday.
On December 16, 2016, Poteet was arrested in Sydney, Australia for assault of her boyfriend, Wade McKenzie. McKenzie has since taken out an apprehended violence order on Poteet.
The former Miss Virginia USA is not a stranger to law enforcement. In 2011, Poteet made headlines when her gay roommate accused her of attacking him, his boyfriend and his friends with homophobic slurs. Poteet was forced to publicly deny these allegations where she told the press that she did, in fact, like gay people.
“The guy that’s in my pageant office is gay, and he’s my best friend in the world,” Poteet said. “I talk to him every day.”
Poteet was also accused of assaulting her American boyfriend, James McElroy, in 2013. She was charged with misdemeanor assault and battery, facing a Richmond court that spring. McElroy said he failed to remember what had happened, forcing the judge to dismiss the charges.
Following the assault case, Poteet was asked to return her crown. She had previously posted a photo with the crown captioned “Miss Alcoholic USA.” (Read: How to Protect Your Online Image for Pageants)
The former beauty queen graduated from Virginia Commonwealth University in 2010. She earned a Bachelor’s degree in biomedical engineering and a Master’s degree in nuclear engineering. Poteet moved to Australia in 2014 to work as a recruitment consultant in engineering and renewable energy.
Poteet is expected to enter a plea before her next court appearance involving the most recent assault allegations.
