The evening gown competition is the prime opportunity for a contestant to show her grace, poise and elegance. This part of the competition is signature to almost every pageant. If fact, pageants often bring up the image of a beautiful young woman gliding across the stage oozing glamour and confidence.

Gowns come in all styles and colors. One of the more popular colors to grace the stages of the pageant world in recent years is blue. Blue is a universally flattering color. However, as with any evening gown, there are details that must not be overlooked in order to shine on stage during the competition.

How to Choose the Right Blue Evening Gown

Shade

As with any color, different shades flatter different skin tones. For example, Miss New York 2016, Camille Sims, wore an icy blue gown at Miss America 2017. Camille has a dewy, dark skin tone. The light shade is a direct contrast to her skin which pops onstage and makes her shine. (Read: Miss New York 2016 Evening Gown: HIT or MISS?)

Another fantastic example of finding the perfect shade for your skin tone would be Miss New Mexico 2016, Stephanie Chavez. Stephanie chose a jewel tone, which flatters nearly every complexion. The blue brings out the gold in her complexion and pops out her dark eyes and hair. (Shop: Pageant heels)

Fit

The fit of a contestant’s evening gown is just as much, if not more, important than the shade of the gown. Even though blue is a universally flattering color, if the gown does not fit, it will have a negative impact of a contestant’s score. Making sure the gown is tailored to fit the body can give a contestant an extra boost of confidence on stage to help capture the judges’ eyes.

For example, Miss Illinois 2016, Jaryn Franklin, dawned a dark blue evening gown with a snug fit during the Miss America 2017 preliminary competition. The super snug mermaid style accentuated her already amazing body. In addition, by pairing the snug fit with a darker shade, she made her already tiny waist almost disappear and accentuated her hourglass figure.

Another example of the perfect fit would be Miss California Teen USA 2013, Cassidy Wolf, who was later crowned Miss Teen USA 2013. Cassidy has an athletic body with incredibly toned arms. By choosing a strapless style with a peplum, she accentuated one of her best features while adding a beautiful curve to her waistline.

The jewel tone pops against her pale skin while the fit and styling with loose, fun waves keep the look teen friendly. Cassidy’s gown was so popular, it was a top gown for many. (Read: Miss Teen USA Top 5 Evening Gowns)

Details

With blue being such a popular color, it is easy to get lost in a sea of dresses. Small details can help a contestant stand out on stage. These details can vary from a dramatic train to lace to unique beading and everything in between. While these small details may not seem like such a big deal, against a sea of blue gowns it could be the thing that makes the contestant stand out.

For example, Miss Denmark 2016, Christina Mikkelsen, stood out against 85 other contestants during the Miss Universe 2016 preliminary evening gown competition. The amount of detail on the gown makes Christina look like a beautiful tall glass of water when paired with the soft waves of her ultra blonde hair.

From the liquid beading to the long shoulder trains to the beaded neckline, every detail works together to make her stand out. While she as since been dethroned, her gown was still one of the best at Miss Universe. (Read: Miss Universe Denmark Christina Mikkelsen Loses Her Crown)

Dare to be Different

Miss Maryland USA 2013, Kasey Staniszewski, took a huge risk with this gown since there is a lot going on. However, everything works together to flatter her and her personality on stage to make her a standout.

The very high slit accentuates her envious legs while the beautiful beading along to bodice draws the eye upward to her face. The fitted silhouette gives her a beautiful figure and the color is electric on the stage. (Read: Miss Maryland USA 2013 Evening Gown: HIT or MISS?)
