Miss Teen of America Adds Age Divisions

We’ve talked a lot about Miss Teen of America over the last year here at The Pageant Planet. Even though the system has been around since 1983, it’s getting a breath of fresh air and bringing back titles partially lost at the turn of the century.

Miss Teen of America

The 90s

The 90s was the decade of dreamers. We thought anything was possible prior to 9/11 and the recession that hit in the 2000s. Because of this, some pageant systems we once adored fell off the map.

In the 90s, Miss Teen of America awarded titles for girls ages 7-12 under its sister program, Distinguished Youth of America. Sound familiar?

Even though competitions at the national level under Distinguished Youth of America ended with the 90s, they continued to award titles in Texas for the last 20 years. These titleholders have even included future Miss Teen of America National Titleholders! Kiera Kinnaird, Miss Teen of America 2013-2014 and Serena Zamarripa, Miss Teen of America 2017 are both former Young Miss of Texas titleholders.

While quite a bit of 90s fashion is coming back in style, the Distinguished Youth of America brand is officially and entirely retiring.

Going Forward

American Pageants Inc. definitely focuses on what is in a candidate’s head and heart rather than what is on her face and the price of the clothes on her body. It brands itself as a “scholarship and recognition pageant” over a “beauty pageant.”
