The announcement from Teletica
Recently, there have been some issues with the Miss Costa Rica Universe 2017 pageant and whether it will actually go on this year. There has been some trouble with the organization, Teletica, which usually produces and broadcasts the pageant every year. This will be the first year since 1960 that Teletica will not broadcast the pageant.
The President of Teletica, René Picado Cozza, has confirmed that the Miss Costa Rica Universe 2017 pageant will not go on. This decision stems largely from conflicts with television scheduling for the second half of the year. The local and international news and media have dominated the television time for the remainder of the year.
In light of this, the Miss Costa Rica Universe Organization has named a new titleholder to represent Costa Rica in this year’s Miss Universe Pageant to be held in November of 2017. The new Miss Costa Rica Universe is Elena Correa, the 1st Runner-up from the 2016 Miss Costa Rica pageant. (Read: Top 10 National Costumes from Miss Universe 2016)
Staff statements to the press
Picado spoke highly of Correa becoming the Costa Rican representative and said, “Elena is a very nice girl . . . we are very happy she will be the one to represent us.” He has also denied rumors that Teletica may be interested in selling the Miss Costa Rica franchise.
Miss Costa Rica Director Gabriela Alfaro has stated that there will be a coronation gala held to crown Elena Correa and casting for 2018 contestants will begin in August. The future Miss Costa Rica has weighed in on this news and said, “it is a great emotion . . . that the great dream I have had all my life has come true. And I promise I will do my best and best effort to represent the country in the best way.”
Costa Rica has sent a representative to Miss Universe every year since 1954. Last year’s winner, Carolina Rodriguez remained unplaced on the final night of competition at the Miss Universe pageant. (Read: 10 Pageant Lessons Learned from Miss Universe 2016)
Good luck to the new Miss Costa Rica 2017, Elena Correa!
