Welcome to a new month with the season of pageantry in full swing as summer officially begins! The start of June also means a recap of the top pageant moments of May 2017. There was a lot of activity in the pageant world recently, so let’s dive right in to the countdown!

10. Miss Universe Official Facebook Hacked
Why would someone want to hack into a titleholder’s official Facebook page and post inappropriate messages and pictures? Your guess is as good as mine.

9. Miss New Mexico Scholarship Organization Under Investigation
Miss New Mexico 2016, Stephanie Chavez, was able to compete at the national Miss America Pageant last summer in Atlantic City, New Jersey.
Chavez won over $6,500 from the state nonprofit, as well as $3,000 from the Miss America Organization. Chavez claims to have not been awarded all of her scholarship funds, and even says other titleholders in the state have not received their scholarship dollars, either.
Chavez has now involved the New Mexico attorney general in order to obtain her full monies and investigate the organizations practice for awarding scholarships to winners. 8. Former Miss USA 2013 Dating Again
Miss USA 2013, Erin Brady, got married on December 13, 2014, after Brady’s reign as Miss USA had ended. In the last year however, there have been rumors and some sources confirm that Brady has since divorced.

7. Miss America Organization Names New President
The long-standing scholarship organization has named Josh Randle as President and Chief Operating Officer (COO), and at 29 years old he is the youngest to take the helm of the nonprofit.
Working with the organization is not a new endeavor for Randle; he has served the last two years as COO for the organization, and has been the National Executive Director for The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Foundation, a charity set up by the British Royal Family. 6. Numerous Miss USA Former Title Holders Compete in Swimsuit Model Search
You may see a familiar face on the cover of an upcoming issue of Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition as four former titleholders from the Miss USA Organization are competing to be chosen as models.
The four women, including former Miss USA 2015 Olivia Jordan, will compete against 35 other applicants for the cover model competition. The four Miss USA former title holders are: Olivia Jordan Miss USA 2015, Haley O’Brien Kalil Miss Minnesota USA 2014, Maaliyah Papillion Miss Louisiana USA 2016, and Jasmyn Wilkins Miss Georgia USA 2012. 5. Miss America 2017 Named Arkansas Governor’s Healthy Life Ambassador
Savvy Shields, Miss America 2017, has a personal platform titled “Eat Better, Live Better.” As she continues to promote this platform, as well as being the good-will ambassador for the Children’s Miracle Network, Savvy has now been announced as the official Healthy Life Ambassador from the governor of Arkansas.

4. Former Miss Israel Stars as Wonder Woman
Gal Gadot, Miss Israel 2004, was just 18 when she won her national title. After being discovered and later cast as Gisele in Fast & Furious, Gadot launched her acting and modeling career.

3. Miss Ireland Universe Names New Director
After experiencing numerous ups and downs in the Miss Ireland Universe Organization, including a number of years where no national pageant was held (years 2007, 2013 and 2016), the organization has a new director that hopes to change the direction of the program.
Brittany Mason is no stranger to the Miss Universe Organization. Mason was Miss Indiana USA 2008 and even placed in the top 10 at Miss USA 2008. 2. New Miss USA 2017 Sparks Controversy with Onstage Answer
On May 14, Kára McCullough answered her onstage question at the national Miss USA 2017 competition, held at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas.
The question asked by host Julianne Hough was, “Do you think healthcare is a right or a privilege and why?”
Kára’s response was, “I’m definitely going to say it’s a privilege. As a government employee, I am granted health care. I see firsthand that in order to have health care, you need to have jobs. So we need to continue to cultivate this environment so that we’re given the opportunity to have jobs as well as healthcare to American citizens worldwide.”

1. Miss District of Columbia Wins Miss USA 2017
On May 14, 2017, in Las Vegas, Nevada, Kára McCullough won over the hearts of the judges to become Miss USA 2017. This is the second year in a row the national crown has been won by the representative of the District of Columbia.
Kára is a 25-year-old scientist with the United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission and has a personal community outreach program called Science Exploration for Kids, which features interactive science activities and tutoring for children in sixth through eleventh grade.
